A steam condenser is an affordable and simple tool that solves the problem of a brew room full of steam. It is a good alternative to an extraction system with a fan and ducting hanging from the ceiling. Condensing steam is also common practice in most breweries.
How the condenser works
Cold water is sprayed through a 30-degree full-cone nozzle directly onto the steam. The steam condenses into water, which runs out of the bottom of the condenser into a drain or a bucket. The unit uses about 0.6 litres of water per minute at 4 bar water pressure.
As the steam condenses inside the unit, it contracts and creates a slight vacuum in the brewing system, which draws the steam into the condenser. This ensures that all steam and DMS are removed.
How to use the condenser
- Fit the condenser once the foam from the hot break has settled. An anti-foam agent is a good idea.
- Connect cold water to the top and a 20 mm silicone hose to the bottom to carry the water to a drain or bucket.
- The water must be able to flow freely downwards so there is no resistance inside the condenser. The open end of the hose must not be submerged in water.
- To add hops or other ingredients during the boil, simply lift the lid and add what you need.
Boil-off and sparge water
If you boil at reduced power, the boil-off is reduced accordingly. Compensate for the lower boil-off with less sparge water. For example, with a 50-litre boil volume and about 10% boil-off per hour, you get 3 litres of boil-off at 60% power instead of 5 litres.
Water connection
The steam condenser has a 1/2" NPT connection on top, so you are free to choose how to connect the water. You can fit, for example, a hose barb or a Gardena quick connector.
