How to choose malt by the sack
- Base or specialty malt: Base malt is the foundation of the recipe and supplies most of the extract, such as pilsner malt, pale ale malt and Munich. Specialty malt is used in smaller proportions for colour, flavour and mouthfeel, such as caramel malt, roasted malt and aromatic malt.
- Colour (EBC): The colour is stated in the title of every sack. BEST Pilsen Malt is 3.0–4.9 EBC, while Carafa Special Type 3 is 1300–1500 EBC.
- Style and origin: German Bestmalz and Weyermann cover lager, pilsner and wheat beer. Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt and the crystal malts from Thomas Fawcett suit British styles. Bohemian Pilsner from Weyermann is made from the Czech barley varieties Bojo and Tolar.
- Sack size: Most sacks are 25 kg. Briess malt comes in 22.7 kg, and flaked oats, barley and maize in 20 kg.

Frequently asked questions about malt by the sack
Can private customers buy malt by the sack?
Yes. You do not need to be a business customer to order full sacks. Discounted professional prices require the business to be registered as a professional customer.
What does EBC on the malt sack mean?
EBC is a scale for the colour of malt and beer. The higher the number, the darker the malt. Pale pilsner malt is around 3–5 EBC, caramel malts range from about 20 to over 300 EBC, and roasted malts are above 1000 EBC.
How much base malt does a brewery need?
Base malt usually makes up the largest share of the grain bill. That is why it pays to buy it in 25 kg sacks, while specialty malt is often used in smaller amounts.
Is the malt crushed?
No, the sacks contain whole malt. To crush it you need a malt mill, which you will find under malt mills.
