Grill pellets and charcoal – pellets, wood chunks, charcoal and binchotan
Here you will find fuel for pellet grills, charcoal grills, kamados and smokers: Traeger and LumberJack wood pellets in 9 kg bags, wood chunks for smoking, Argentinian quebracho blanco and oak charcoal, binchotan for the shichirin, and firelighters. Pellets give flavour according to the wood, while the charcoal decides how hot and how long the grill burns.
Grill pellets – choose the flavour to match the food
In a pellet grill the pellets are both the heat source and the smoke flavour. Both brands are 100 % wood with no binders.
- Traeger: Signature Blend, Hickory, Cherry, Apple, Oak and Competition Blend in 9 kg bags, plus a four-flavour sampler. Traeger states that a bag of Signature Blend lasts about 40 hours when smoking, 20 hours at 150 °C and 10 hours at full power.
- LumberJack: Pellets made from whole trees, not sawdust. Competition Blend is maple, hickory and cherry. There are also 100 % Hickory, Supreme Blend (oak, hickory and cherry), Mesquite Blend and Oak. The sampler pack has four bags.
Fruitwoods such as cherry and apple give a mild, sweet smoke that suits pork and poultry. Hickory and mesquite give a stronger smoke for beef and brisket.
Wood chunks for smoking
LumberJack wood chunks in hickory, pecan and mesquite go straight onto the coals of a charcoal grill or into a smoker box on a gas grill. They need no soaking and give steadier smoke for longer than wood chips.
Charcoal and binchotan
| Charcoal | Wood | Bag | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Missing Link | Quebracho blanco | 5 and 8 kg | Large pieces (L–XL), burns 2–3 times longer than standard charcoal |

| Binchotan | White eucalyptus | 1 and 5 kg | About 95 % carbon and 1.8 % ash, little smoke, for the shichirin |
Lighting
Fuegonet Firestarter are firelighters made from wood and vegetable oils that burn for more than 8 minutes each. There is also wood wool for lighting and a folding chimney starter from Napoleon. Lighter fluid should not be used on quebracho charcoal.
Frequently asked questions about pellets and charcoal
How long does a bag of pellets last?
It depends on the temperature. Traeger states about 40 hours when smoking, 20 hours at 150 °C and 10 hours at full power for a 9 kg bag.
What is the difference between pellets and wood chunks?
Pellets are compressed wood that both heats and smokes in a pellet grill. Wood chunks are larger pieces of wood that only give smoke, placed on the coals of a charcoal grill or in a smoker box on a gas grill.
What is quebracho blanco?
Quebracho blanco is a very hard wood from Argentina. The charcoal comes in large, dense pieces that burn for a long time with high, stable heat and little smoke.
What is binchotan?
Binchotan is a charcoal with a very high carbon content that burns clean, hot and long without crackling. It is used mainly in Japanese table grills such as the shichirin and konro. It is easiest to light over a layer of softer charcoal, with a gas torch or in a binchopan.
How should I store pellets?
Dry and tightly closed. Damp pellets lose flavour and burn poorly. A pellet bin with a lid, such as the Traeger StayDry, keeps them dry.
