Description
ISO 4801 Alcoholmeter 70–80% vol – precise measurement of alcohol strength
This alcoholmeter from Alla France measures the alcohol strength of alcohol and water mixtures in the 70–80% vol range. It has 0.1% vol divisions, is calibrated at 20°C and is made to the ISO 4801 standard for glass alcoholmeters. The meter is supplied with a Certificate of Conformity.
An alcoholmeter floats in the liquid, and you read the alcohol strength where the liquid surface crosses the scale. The narrow range gives fine divisions and high accuracy. Alla France makes alcoholmeters for other ranges too, from 20 to 100% vol.
How to use the alcoholmeter
- Fill a tall test jar with the sample so the meter floats freely without touching the bottom or the wall.
- Make sure the sample is at 20°C, the calibration temperature.
- Lower the meter gently into the liquid and read the scale at the liquid surface.

Frequently asked questions about the ISO 4801 Alcoholmeter 70–80% vol
Can I measure the alcohol in beer or wine with an alcoholmeter?
No. An alcoholmeter reads correctly only in mixtures of alcohol and water. Sugar and other dissolved substances in beer and wine change the density and give a false reading. For beer and wine, use a hydrometer and calculate the alcohol from OG and FG.
Why must the sample be at 20°C?
The meter is calibrated at 20°C. The density of the liquid changes with temperature, so at another temperature the reading will be inaccurate.
How accurate is the meter?
The scale has 0.1% vol divisions, and the stated accuracy is ± 0.1% vol.
What does ISO 4801 mean?
ISO 4801 is the international standard for glass alcoholmeters and alcohol hydrometers. The meter is supplied with a Certificate of Conformity.
