Cryo Hops – concentrated lupulin for intense hop aroma
Cryo Hops are hop pellets made from concentrated lupulin, the part of the hop cone that holds the resins and aromatic oils. Here you will find Cryo Hops from Yakima Chief Hops in nitrogen-flushed 25 g bags, with 20–23% alpha acid in most varieties. They give intense flavour and aroma with less vegetal matter than standard pellets.
How Cryo Hops work
The name comes from the Greek word "kryos", meaning frost. Whole hop cones are separated at low temperature in a nitrogen-rich environment into two parts: concentrated lupulin and leaf. The lupulin is pressed into pellets. As a result, you can add a lot of alpha acid and hop oil without as much vegetal material, which can cause astringency and more beer loss in the hop trub.
How to choose Cryo Hops
- Citrus and tropical fruit: Citra Cryo (22.9%) and Mosaic Cryo (22.5%) are first choices for IPA and NEIPA.
- Pine and resin: Simcoe Cryo (21.7%) gives a more resinous profile.
- Ready-made blend: Cryo Pop Original Blend (22.5%) delivers big tropical, stone fruit and citrus aromas and can be used on its own, as a booster or during active fermentation.
- Other varieties: Idaho 7, Sabro, Ekuanot and Cascade.

Frequently asked questions about Cryo Hops
When do I add Cryo Hops?
Cryo Hops can be used anywhere you would use regular hops: in the boil, in the whirlpool and for dry hopping. They are mostly used for dry hopping and late additions, where aroma matters most.
How much Cryo Hops should I use compared with regular pellets?
Cryo Hops have roughly twice the alpha acid of standard pellets of the same variety, for example 22.9% for Citra Cryo against 14% for Citra 100 g. You therefore need considerably less. Work out the amount from the alpha acid and the aroma you want.
Can I dry hop during fermentation?
Yes. Cryo Pop is designed for, among other things, additions during active fermentation, when the yeast can transform hop compounds and give a fruitier aroma (biotransformation).
