Base malt by the sack – pilsner, pale ale and Munich malt in 25 kg
Base malt by the sack is malt in 25 kg sacks that forms the backbone of the recipe. Here you will find pilsner, pale ale, Vienna, Munich and wheat malt from Bestmalz, Bohemian Pilsner from Weyermann and Maris Otter from Thomas Fawcett & Sons. The colour in EBC is stated in the title of every sack.

How to choose base malt
- Pilsner and lager: BEST Pilsen Malt is an enzyme-strong, extract-rich base malt that handles a high share of specialty malt. Bohemian Pilsner from Weyermann is made from the Czech barley varieties Bojo and Tolar, for pilsner with pronounced malt character.
- British styles and IPA: BEST Pale Ale Malt gives a fuller golden colour and flavour. Maris Otter from Thomas Fawcett is known for its rich, slightly nutty flavour.
- Malty and darker beers: BEST Munich adds malty flavour to amber and dark beers, even at low rates. Vienna gives a full golden colour and good foam. Munich Dark adds even more colour and body.
- Wheat beer: BEST Wheat Malt is the base malt for wheat beers.
- Red beer: BEST Red X can be used at up to 100 % and gives a reddish colour without other malts.

Frequently asked questions about base malt
What is the difference between pilsner malt and pale ale malt?
Pilsner malt is the palest, around 3–5 EBC, and gives a clean, pale beer. Pale ale malt is slightly darker, 5–7.5 EBC, and gives fuller colour and flavour to British styles and IPA.
Can I brew with BEST Red X alone?
Yes. According to Bestmalz, BEST Red X can be used at up to 100 % with no other malt, giving a reddish beer.
What is Maris Otter?
Maris Otter is a British barley variety. The pale ale malt from Thomas Fawcett is made from it and has a rich, slightly nutty flavour.
