Description
Traditional Brewing of Beer - A Book by Lars Marius Garshol
Beer was central to Norwegian farming society and, along with the farm's food, was part of social interaction. Good beer reflected the brewer's personality and status in the local community. The grain it was made from was the farm's most important product, and good beer showed that one had good grain. Beer was a sign of how skilled one was at malting and brewing, and its strength showed how much grain one could afford to brew with.
The brewing method was passed down between generations as part of the tradition of each individual farm, and variations were great. Until now, ingredients and processes have largely been unknown to modern brewers.
Traditional Brewing of Beer covers history, equipment, brewing processes, yeast, and ingredients. The book provides an overview of how beer was brewed around the country, as well as its development over time. Finally, the author describes the current situation of Norwegian traditional brewing today.
The book is supported by the Norwegian Cultural Fund.
