PBS tablets 5 pcs – buffer solution for yeast counts and viability tests
PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) is a solution with the same salt concentration as the inside of the cells. It is used to dilute yeast samples without damaging the cells, and is important when checking yeast viability and counting yeast cells. The pack contains 5 tablets from VWR.
How to make PBS solution
Dissolve one tablet in 100 ml water. This gives 1X PBS solution with a pH of 7.3–7.5.
Composition of the finished solution (1X PBS)
- 137 mM sodium chloride
- 2.7 mM potassium chloride
- 10 mM phosphate buffer
- pH 7.3–7.5
Frequently asked questions about PBS tablets
Why use PBS instead of water?
PBS has the same salt concentration as the inside of the yeast cells. In plain water the cells can take up water and be damaged, making counts and viability tests less reliable.
How much solution does one tablet make?
One tablet makes 100 ml of 1X PBS solution.
What else do I need to count yeast?
A microscope and a counting chamber, such as a Bürker chamber.
