Fermtech – auto-siphons, bottle filler and wine thief
Fermtech is a Canadian maker of homebrewing and winemaking equipment, founded in 1987 in Ontario. Here you will find auto-siphons in three sizes, The Profiller bottle filler, The Thief wine thief, The Whip degasser and the aPour wine dispenser. The auto-siphons, The Profiller, The Thief and The Whip are food-grade approved under EU rules.
How to choose an auto-siphon
An auto-siphon has a built-in pump. You pump once, and the liquid then flows by itself from the fermenter into a new vessel, keg or bottle. On the Mini, a removable tip keeps sediment from being drawn along.

All the auto-siphons are rated to a maximum of 49 °C, so they are not made for hot wort. The siphon holder clamps the siphon securely to the vessel at the right height, leaving both hands free.
Bottling, sampling and wine
The Profiller: A 36 cm bottle filler with a springless tip. Lift the bottle to stop the flow, and the hose barb fits tubing from 5/16" to 3/8".
The Thief: A clear acrylic wine and beer thief, 48 cm long. Dip once to take a sample for the hydrometer, and touch the tip to the rim to empty it.
The Whip: A degasser that removes CO₂ from wine during winemaking.
aPour: A reusable 6-litre wine dispenser, equal to 8 bottles of wine, with oxygen-barrier bags. According to Fermtech, the wine keeps for up to 6 months. Replacement bags come in packs of 3.
Racking Tube Holder and tips: A holder and tips for standard 3/8" and 1/2" racking canes.
Frequently asked questions about Fermtech
How do I use an auto-siphon?
Place the siphon in the vessel with the tip above the sediment, and lead the tubing into the vessel or keg you are filling. Pump once, and the liquid keeps flowing by itself as long as the tubing sits lower than the vessel.
Can the auto-siphon handle hot wort?
No. Fermtech auto-siphons are rated to a maximum of 49 °C. Cool the wort before using them.
Which tubing fits the auto-siphon?
Mini and Regular have a 3/8" cane and come with 5/16" inner diameter tubing. Large has a 1/2" cane and comes with 1/2" inner diameter tubing.
Why does wine need degassing?
Wine that has fermented contains dissolved CO₂. If you do not remove it before fining and bottling, the wine can turn spritzy and clear less well. The Whip is made to remove it.
