A spunding valve is an adjustable pressure relief valve. It holds the pressure in the tank at the level you set and releases any CO2 above it. This professional version from Brumetal has a 1.5" Tri-Clamp connection, a pressure gauge and a polycarbonate cup for sanitizer. It is made from top-quality 304 stainless steel and is used for pressure fermentation and natural carbonation in fermentation tanks.

How to use the valve
Fit the valve to a 1.5" Tri-Clamp port on top of the tank with a clamp and gasket, and set the pressure you want. When fermentation produces more CO2 than the setting, the valve releases the excess. Always check the maximum pressure your tank is rated for.

Frequently asked questions about the 1.5" Tri-Clamp Spunding Valve
What pressure should I ferment at?
A typical pressure for pressure fermentation is 0.7–1 bar. Many brewers let the first couple of days run without pressure and fit the valve afterwards. Leave 15–20% headspace in the tank.
Why ferment under pressure?
Pressure suppresses ester formation, so lagers, for example, can be fermented warmer. The CO2 produced also stays in the beer, so it is carbonated in the tank.
What is the sanitizer cup for?
The released gas passes through the cup. You can see that gas is coming out, and it acts as a barrier against contamination.
Does the valve fit tanks with 34 mm Tri-Clamp?
No, this one has a 1.5" Tri-Clamp. For tanks with 34 mm ports there is a separate spunding valve with 34 mm Tri-Clamp.
