Blichmann RipTide – a brewing pump designed for homebrewing
The RipTide from Blichmann Engineering is a pump designed specifically for homebrewing. Use it to recirculate wort during the mash, move hot wort between vessels or pump wort through a chiller. The pump is quiet and easy to clean, and has a built-in flow control valve and an integrated air vent valve for fast priming.

How to use the RipTide
- Fill the pump with liquid before switching it on. Never run the pump dry.
- If liquid does not flow easily into the pump, gently pull the ring on the air vent valve until the air is out. Hot liquid can come out of the vent holes, so wear a heat-resistant glove.
- Control the flow with the valve on the outlet. Never fit a throttling valve on the inlet, as this can cause cavitation and damage the pump.
- Use hose with a 1/2" inner diameter that handles heat and pressure, and secure all hoses with clamps.
- Keep the motor away from heat sources. The ambient temperature around the motor must not exceed 52 °C.
Frequently asked questions about the Blichmann RipTide
Can the RipTide handle boiling wort?
Yes. According to the Norwegian manual the pump handles liquids up to 120 °C. The motor must still be kept away from the heat of the kettle.
Can the pump run dry?
No. Never run the pump without liquid, as this can cause permanent damage. Fill the pump head and bleed the air with the vent valve before starting.
How do I control the flow?
With the integral linear valve on the outlet. You do not need a separate valve, and you should never throttle the inlet.
How do I clean the pump?
Remove the pump head, soak the parts in a chlorine-free cleaner such as PBW, rinse and sanitize. Never immerse the motor in liquid. Chlorine-based products damage stainless steel over time.
