Frequently asked questions about the Gay-Lussac alcoholmeter 40–75 %
Can I measure the alcohol in beer or wine with it?
No. An alcoholmeter only reads correctly in pure mixtures of alcohol and water. Sugar and other substances in beer and wine give a false reading. The alcohol in beer and wine is instead calculated from OG and FG measured with a hydrometer.
Why does temperature matter?
The density of the liquid changes with temperature. The alcoholmeter is calibrated at 15.6 °C, so the reading is most accurate when the sample is at that temperature.
Are other ranges available?
