Description
Hydrometer for beer, cider and wine – SG 0.980 to 1.110
A hydrometer measures the density, or Specific Gravity (SG), of wort, must and finished beer, cider or wine. With one reading before fermentation (OG) and one after (FG), you can see when fermentation is finished and calculate the alcohol content. This hydrometer has a scale from 0.980 to 1.110, is 27.5 cm long and is calibrated at 20 °C. It is made by Alla France.
Technical data
- Scale: SG 0.980–1.110
- Length: 27.5 cm
- Calibration temperature: 20 °C
- Manufacturer: Alla France
How to use the hydrometer
- Sanitize the hydrometer and a test jar or measuring cylinder.
- Fill the test jar with a sample of the wort or beer.
- Lower the hydrometer into the sample and give it a small spin to release air bubbles.
- Read the scale where the surface of the liquid meets the hydrometer. The sample should be around 20 °C.
Frequently asked questions about hydrometers
How do I know fermentation is finished?
Take readings a couple of days apart. Fermentation is finished when you get the same reading two to three days in a row.
How do I calculate the alcohol content?
Use the formula ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25. Example: OG 1.050 and FG 1.010 give (1.050 − 1.010) × 131.25 = 5.25%.
Why does temperature matter?
The hydrometer is calibrated at 20 °C. If the sample is warmer or colder, the reading will be slightly off. Cool or warm the sample to around 20 °C before reading.
Can I use it for mead?
The scale goes up to 1.110. Mead often starts higher, in which case you need a hydrometer with a higher scale.
