Description
Potassium chloride (KCl) 100 g – for adjusting the chloride level of brewing water
Potassium chloride (KCl) is a mineral salt used in brewing to adjust the ion balance of the water. With KCl you can raise the chloride content of the water. Chloride accentuates malt body and gives a rounder flavour, which makes it well suited to malt-forward beers such as stout and porter. Potassium chloride adds chloride without calcium.
Potassium chloride is also used in the food industry as a substitute for table salt (sodium chloride), to reduce sodium in food. Calculate the right amount from the water profile you want to reach, for example in Brewfather.
Properties
- Raises the chloride level of the water
- Accentuates malt character and gives a rounded flavour
- Dissolves easily in water and is easy to dose
- Adds chloride without calcium
Technical data
- Contents: potassium chloride (E508), white, odourless crystals
- Anti-caking agent: approx. 1% magnesium hydroxide carbonate
- Pack size: 100 g
- Supplier: Brouwland
Warnings and safety
- Follow the recommended dosage. Too much can affect the flavour of the beer, and large amounts can cause side effects.

- Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Rinse spills thoroughly with water. Wear gloves if you have sensitive skin.
Frequently asked questions about potassium chloride
What is potassium chloride used for in brewing?
To raise the chloride content of the brewing water. Chloride accentuates malt body and sweetness, while sulphate accentuates hops and bitterness.
What is the difference between potassium chloride and calcium chloride?
Both add chloride. Calcium chloride also adds calcium, which the yeast needs (at least 50 mg/l). Potassium chloride is used when you want more chloride without adding more calcium.
How much should I use?
It depends on your water and the beer style. Enter your water profile in brewing software such as Brewfather and it will calculate the amount.
How do I store potassium chloride?
Dry and tightly closed, because it absorbs moisture and can clump.
