Frequently asked questions about magnesium sulphate
When should I use magnesium sulphate instead of gypsum?
When you want to raise sulphate without adding more calcium. Gypsum (calcium sulphate) adds both calcium and sulphate.
How is magnesium sulphate added?
Salts for the mash are mixed with the malt. Salts for the sparge water are first dissolved in a little water. The amount is calculated from the water profile and beer style, for example in Brewfather.
Which beers is it suited to?
Sulphate accentuates hops and bitterness, so magnesium sulphate is mostly used in hoppy beers such as IPA and pale ale.
