How the fermentation egg works
The shape is based on the golden ratio and has no corners or edges. According to Speidel, wine, beer and cider can therefore move freely in the tank during fermentation and storage, making the process gentle. The idea is old: beer was once stored in egg-shaped amphorae, and more recently wine has been stored in egg-shaped concrete vessels. Speidel makes its fermentation egg from food-safe polyethylene.
The polyethylene lets a little oxygen through, giving an even oxygen influence during fermentation and maturation. The smooth interior makes the egg easy to clean.

Frequently asked questions about the Speidel Fermentegg 250 litres
What can I ferment in the egg?
Speidel states that the fermentation egg is suitable for wine, beer and cider, for both fermentation and storage.
Why is the tank shaped like an egg?
Without corners and edges, the liquid can move freely in the tank during fermentation and storage. That is the idea behind the shape, which is based on ancient egg-shaped amphorae.
Does polyethylene let oxygen through?
Yes, a little. Speidel uses this deliberately to give an even oxygen influence during fermentation and maturation. If the beer or wine is to be stored for a long time without oxygen, a stainless steel tank is a better choice.
What does the egg cost, and what is the lead time?
The Fermentegg is made to order and shipped directly from Speidel. Price and lead time are available on request.
