Description
Tetrahop Gold 1 kg – hop extract for better foam and light-stable beer
Tetrahop Gold is a hop product from BarthHaas that improves and stabilises the foam on beer while also adding bitterness. It is an aqueous alkaline solution of the potassium salts of tetrahydro-iso-alpha acids, produced from CO2 hop extract. Tetrahop Gold is added after fermentation, before filtration, and partly replaces regular bittering hops.
Please note: This product is only available in Norway.
Characteristics
- Improves and stabilises foam
- Gives 1.0–1.7 times the perceived bitterness of normal iso-alpha acids, depending on the beer
- Protects against light-struck flavour when all bitterness in the beer comes from reduced hop acids
- Also acts as an antimicrobial agent in beer
How to use Tetrahop Gold
Tetrahop Gold is used after fermentation and before final filtration. It should not be added to the kettle. Dose close to a point of turbulent flow, for example the suction side of a centrifugal pump, and spread the addition over about 70% of the transfer time. The product can be added undiluted at ambient temperature. If dilution is needed, use demineralised water adjusted to pH 10–11 with KOH, not sodium bases.
BarthHaas calculates the dose as BU × 0.93 g/hL (BU × 0.92 mL/hL), where BU is the desired sensory bitterness. The calculation assumes tetrahydro-iso-alpha acids are 1.7 times as bitter as iso-alpha acids and 70% utilisation. For foam enhancement, BarthHaas recommends no more than 5 ppm tetrahydro-iso-alpha acids in the finished beer, with kettle bittering reduced accordingly. Brewery trials are the best way to find the right dose.

Frequently asked questions about Tetrahop Gold
How much Tetrahop Gold do I need?
BarthHaas calculates BU × 0.93 g per hectolitre. For 5 BU that is about 4.7 g/hL (4.6 mL/hL). Run trials in your own brewery to find the right dose for bitterness and foam.
Does Tetrahop Gold protect against light-struck flavour in clear bottles?
Only when the beer contains no normal iso-alpha acids. For light-stable beer in clear or green glass, all bitterness must come from reduced hop acids. Regular hops in the kettle produce iso-alpha acids and remove the protection.
Can I add Tetrahop Gold to the kettle?
No, BarthHaas advises against kettle dosing. Tetrahop Gold is used after fermentation, preferably before final filtration.
How should I store Tetrahop Gold?
In full, closed containers at 15–25 °C. Prolonged storage at high temperature causes deterioration, and opened containers should be used within a few days. Do not leave the product in dosing lines at low temperatures.
