Project Brew Beer Gas Mini Regulator
A compact regulator developed especially for use with 21 ml Beer Gas cartridges (a mix of 70% nitrogen and 30% CO2). It lets you adjust the pressure easily and precisely between 0–45 PSI / 0–3.1 bar, and it can deliver higher pressure than a normal CO2 regulator. Guinness, for example, is poured at 2–2.4 bar.
The regulator also works very well with standard non-threaded 16 g CO2 cartridges.
How beer gas works
Beer gas is used to pour beer through a creamer / restrictor disc in a stout tap or stout spout, which can be fitted to Ultratap, Intertap and Nukatap faucets among others. The result is a rich and creamy stout or porter, just as it should be.
Serving beer with CO2 as the driving gas normally happens at around 1 bar (10–15 PSI), but higher pressure is needed to push the beer through a creamer / restrictor disc and get the desired effect. With this regulator you can safely pour at 2–3 bar (30–45 PSI) when needed. There is no risk of overcarbonating the beer, because the beer gas cartridges contain only 30% CO2. The remaining 70% nitrogen does not dissolve in the beer and therefore does not raise the carbonation level. At 3 bar, for example, the CO2 pressure on its own is only 0.9 bar.
How to use beer gas
- Carbonate the beer as usual with CO2 to the level you want. A nitro stout is typically 1.2–1.7 volumes of CO2, which is low carbonation.
- Disconnect the CO2 and fit the mini regulator with a 21 ml beer gas cartridge.
- Adjust the pressure until you get the creamy result you want.
- Fill the glass about 75%. Wait 1–2 minutes for the foam to settle, then open the tap partially to top off the glass slowly.
The regulator is solidly built from brass and stainless steel. It has a flare fitting for mounting on a ball lock CO2 disconnect with MFL threads.

Frequently asked questions about the Beer Gas Mini Regulator
Will the beer overcarbonate when I pour with 2–3 bar of beer gas?
No. Only 30% of the gas is CO2, and the nitrogen does not dissolve in the beer. At 3 bar the CO2 pressure equals only 0.9 bar, which is lower than normal serving pressure.
Do I need a special tap for nitro beer?
Yes. The effect comes from a creamer / restrictor disc in a stout tap or stout spout, which can be fitted to Ultratap, Intertap and Nukatap among others.
How highly should the beer be carbonated?
A nitro stout is typically 1.2–1.7 volumes of CO2. Carbonate with regular CO2 first, then switch to beer gas for pouring.
