Description
Brewing Sugar – 100 % dextrose for carbonating beer
Dextrose (dextrose monohydrate) is the most widely used sugar for natural carbonation of beer. It is 100 % fermentable, gives a cleaner fermentation and flavour than ordinary household sugar and leaves no residual sweetness. Dextrose is also used in extract kits and cider kits that call for sugar.
The sugar comes in a handy 500 g zip-lock bag.
Features
- ingredients: dextrose monohydrate S
- 100 % fermentable, no residual sweetness
- cleaner fermentation and flavour than ordinary sugar
- zip-lock bag, 500 g
How to use dextrose for carbonation
Dissolve the sugar in a little water and boil the solution so it is sterile. A blue-cap borosilicate glass bottle is handy for the priming solution and can also be used when rehydrating dry yeast. Mix the priming solution gently into the beer before bottling, without splashing, so the beer does not pick up oxygen.
How much sugar you need depends on beer style, temperature and the carbonation level you want. Use a priming calculator, for example in Brewfather.
Storage
Store dry and at room temperature, ideally around 20 °C.
Frequently asked questions about dextrose
Why dextrose instead of ordinary sugar?
Dextrose is 100 % fermentable and gives a cleaner fermentation and flavour than ordinary household sugar. It leaves no residual sweetness.
Can I use carbonation drops instead?
Yes. Carbonation drops are an easy option when bottling: one drop per 0.33 L bottle. A priming solution gives you more control over the amount.
Can dextrose be used in extract kits?
Yes, in kits that call for sugar, such as some cider kits. For beer kits, malt extract gives better flavour, body and mouthfeel than sugar.
