Crystal Red Malt is a drum-roasted, crystallized malt that, at low amounts, contributes shades of gold, orange, and red while minimizing flavor impact. At more moderate usage rates, this unique specialty malt provides extreme red/brown colors and complex caramelized/burnt sugar notes.
Usage Rates / Beer Styles
- <1% To contribute golden colors in Pale Ales and Lagers, with minimal impact on flavor/fermentation
- 1-3% For orange tones and light caramel flavors in Amber Ales and Lagers
- 3-7% For red color and low caramel, toffee flavor in English Red, Scotch Ales
- 7-10% For deep red, cola colors, and mild complex sugar flavors in Dark Ales and Lagers
- 10-15% For intensely flavored and colored beers like Barley Wines and certain Stouts
