Frequently asked questions about the 5000 ml Erlenmeyer flask
How big a starter can I make in a 5 litre flask?
The flask needs headspace above the starter, so the starter should be clearly smaller than the flask volume. A 2 litre starter, for example, needs a flask larger than 2 litres.
How do I make wort for the starter?
100 g of spray malt per litre of water gives an OG of about 1.040. Boil for 5–10 minutes, cool to below 25 °C and pitch the yeast.
Do I need a stir plate?
It is recommended. For a 5 litre flask you need a stir plate designed for large volumes.
What kind of stopper should I use?
A cotton stopper lets air in and keeps bacteria out. It can be sanitized wrapped in foil in the oven at 150 °C for about 15 minutes.
