Description
Yeast Starter Kit – stir plate, Erlenmeyer flask and accessories
A complete kit for making yeast starters for fresh yeast. A starter lets you grow the yeast before brew day, so you have enough healthy cells for stronger beers, lagers and larger batches. The kit includes a magnetic stirrer from Velp Scientifica for up to 5 litres of liquid and a 2000 ml Erlenmeyer flask in 3.3 borosilicate glass from VWR.
The kit contains
- Magnetic stirrer 5L – Velp Scientifica
- Erlenmeyer flask 2000 ml
- Stir bar, oval, 40 × 16 mm
- 2 cotton plugs for the Erlenmeyer flask (wrap in aluminium foil and sterilize in the oven before use)
- Spray malt, 450 g
- WLN1000 yeast nutrient
- Anti-Foam Vinoferm – antifoaming agent, 100 ml
How to make a yeast starter
- Mix spray malt and water. 100 g of spray malt per litre of water gives an OG of approx. 1.040.
- Boil the starter wort for 5–10 minutes, ideally with a little Anti-Foam, and cool it to below 25 °C.
- Pitch the yeast, add the stir bar and leave the starter on the stir plate until you see a vortex in the liquid.
- Leave it for at least 12 hours, then at least a day in the fridge. Decant the liquid above the yeast before pitching it into the wort.
The flask needs headspace above the liquid. In a 2000 ml flask the starter should therefore be less than 2 litres.
The kit is adapted to our guide on how to make a simplified yeast starter – read here (Norwegian)
Frequently asked questions about the Yeast Starter Kit
Why make a yeast starter?
A starter gives you more and healthier yeast cells. It is especially useful for strong beers, lagers and large batches. Lager yeast needs almost twice as many cells as ale yeast.
How big a starter can I make in the flask?
The flask holds 2000 ml, and a starter needs headspace. Make a starter of less than 2 litres. The stir plate handles up to 5 litres, so you can use a larger flask later.
How do I sterilize the cotton plug?
Wrap the plug in aluminium foil and sterilize it in the oven at 150 °C for about 15 minutes.
What is the Anti-Foam for?
A starter on a stir plate foams easily. Anti-Foam reduces the foam so it does not push out past the cotton plug.
