Frequently asked questions about the 75–100% alcoholmeter
Can I measure the alcohol content of beer or wine with the alcoholmeter?
No. The alcoholmeter only reads correctly in mixtures of alcohol and water. Sugar and other substances in beer and wine give a false reading. Instead, measure OG and FG with a hydrometer and calculate ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25.
At what temperature should I measure?
The alcoholmeter is calibrated at 15.6 °C. If you measure at a different temperature, the reading will be inaccurate.
What does Gay-Lussac mean?
Gay-Lussac is the scale for alcohol in percent by volume (% vol).
