Frequently asked questions about iodine solution
How do I do an iodine test on the mash?
Take a few drops of liquid from the mash without any grain and put them on a white plate or tile. Add a drop of iodine. If the sample turns blue-black, there is still starch left. If it stays yellow-brown, the starch has been converted.
Can the sample go back into the mash?
No. The sample with iodine must be thrown away and never returned to the mash or wort.
Why avoid grain particles in the sample?
Husks and grain pieces contain starch that does not dissolve, and can give a reaction even when the liquid is fully converted.
