Description

Magnum hop pellets – German bittering hop with clean, neutral bitterness

Magnum hop pellets are a German bittering hop with high alpha acid and a clean, neutral bitterness. It is known for its versatility and is used in everything from lagers and pilsners to IPAs and strong ales. Magnum gives little aroma, which makes it well suited as an early bittering hop without dominating the flavour of the beer. A reliable choice for precise and pleasant bitterness. The pack contains 100 g of pellets.

Features

  • Clean and neutral bitterness
  • High alpha acid, so a small amount gives plenty of bitterness
  • Faint aroma of herbs and pine needles; BarthHaas also describes cool mint, sweet fruit and pepper
  • Suits lager, pilsner, IPA and strong ales
  • Alternative hop: Northern Brewer

Typical values for the variety

BarthHaas gives these ranges for Hallertauer Magnum. The values vary from harvest to harvest.

  • Alpha acid: typically 9–18.2%
  • Beta acid: typically 4.1–7.1%
  • Total oil: 1.5–3.9 ml/100 g
  • Myrcene: up to 45.9% and humulene: up to 27.4% of the oil
  • Origin: Germany, bred in Hüll, daughter of Galena

Storage

The hops are vacuum-packed and stored in a freezer room at −18 °C, and the quality keeps well for several years. We prioritise hops from the last two harvests, but older hops can be just as good when they have been stored correctly. Once the pack is opened, seal it airtight and put it in the freezer. Frequently asked questions about Magnum

When do I add Magnum?

Magnum is used as a bittering hop and is added early in the boil, usually at the start. Bitterness depends on quantity, boil time and alpha acid, and with high alpha acid you get clean bitterness from little hop material.

Does Magnum give aroma?

Very little. Magnum is chosen for its bitterness, but BarthHaas describes faint notes of mint, sweet fruit, pepper and resin.

What can I use instead of Magnum?

Northern Brewer is a possible alternative.

What alpha acid does Magnum have?

BarthHaas gives a typical range of 9–18.2% for the variety. The alpha acid for the lot you receive is stated in the product title, and that is the figure to use when calculating IBU.
