Description

Northern Brewer hop pellets 100 g – classic dual-purpose hop

Northern Brewer is a versatile hop known for its distinct bitterness and aromas of pine, mint and light spice. It is often used in bitter, porter, steam beer and darker ales. Northern Brewer works as both a bittering and an aroma hop, and gives the beer a clear but balanced hop profile. It pairs well with Fuggle, East Kent Goldings or Perle.

The variety was bred in England in 1934 for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries. Today it is grown mainly in the Hallertau region of Germany, where it has developed distinct aroma qualities.

  • Pine and mint
  • Tobacco

How to use Northern Brewer

Northern Brewer gives clean, classic bitterness at the start of the boil, and can also be added later for aroma. Suits bitter, porter, steam beer and darker ales.

Technical data

  • Origin: Germany (Hallertau)

Typical values for the variety are from Yakima Valley Hops. Values vary from year to year. The alpha acid for the lot you receive is stated in the product title. Use that figure when calculating bitterness.

Storage and quality

The hops are vacuum packed and stored in a freezer room at -18 °C, so the quality keeps for several years. We focus on offering hops from the last two harvests, but older hops can be just as good as long as they have been stored correctly. At home, keep the hops cold, dark and airtight, preferably in the freezer. Read more about shelf life and storage of hops in the article from Yakima Valley Hops (PDF).
