PBW 450 g cleaner for brewing equipment
PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) from Five Star Chemicals is a powerful alkaline, non-caustic and environmentally friendly cleaner for brewing equipment. It removes organic matter and protein residues from brewing equipment, fermenters, kegs and hoses, and is used by both breweries and homebrewers.
PBW is a cleaner and is used before sanitizing. After cleaning, rinse the equipment and then sanitize it with, for example, Star San.

How to use PBW
Dissolve PBW in hot water; we recommend approx. 60 °C.
- Normal cleaning: 7–14 g per litre of water
- Heavy soiling: 21 g per litre of water
Rinse thoroughly with water after use, then sanitize the equipment.

Frequently asked questions about PBW cleaner
How much PBW should I use?
For normal cleaning, use 7–14 g per litre of hot water. For heavy soiling, increase to 21 g per litre.
Does PBW need to be rinsed off?
Yes. Rinse the equipment thoroughly with water after cleaning with PBW, then sanitize with a sanitizer such as Star San.
Can I use PBW on copper, aluminium and brass?
Yes. PBW is non-caustic and safe on stainless steel, rubber, plastic and soft metals such as copper, aluminium and brass. Do not use it on Teflon.
What is the difference between PBW and Star San?
PBW is a cleaner that removes dirt and organic residues. Star San is a sanitizer used afterwards, on clean equipment.
Can I use ordinary dishwasher detergent instead?
Dishwasher detergent is less effective and may contain sanitizer. For brewing equipment, we recommend a dedicated brewery cleaner such as PBW.
