Star San acid-based sanitizer for homebrewing
Star San is an environmentally friendly, acid-based sanitizer for brewing equipment, fermenters, kegs, bottles, hoses and water containers – everything on the cold side of brewing. It is self-foaming, so the foam reaches even the most awkward places. Star San is made by Five Star Chemicals in the USA. The 32 oz (9.4 dl) bottle has a built-in dosing chamber that makes it easy to measure.
How to use Star San
- Clean the equipment first. Star San sanitises but does not remove dirt. For cleaning, use for example PBW.
- Mix Star San with water using the ratio below.
- Fill, dip or spray the equipment so that all surfaces are covered. A contact time of 30 seconds is enough.
Star San can be used as a no-rinse sanitizer as before, but Star San, Saniclean, Chemipro San and similar products are now recommended by law to be rinsed with water after use.

- 1 oz (30 ml) to 19 litres (5 gallons) of water
- 15 ml to 9.5 litres of water
Safety

Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling undiluted Star San. The undiluted product can also mark kitchen worktops.

How much Star San should I use?
Mix 30 ml of Star San in 19 litres of water, or 15 ml in 9.5 litres of water. The dosing chamber on the bottle makes it easy to measure the right amount.
What contact time does Star San need?
Star San works in 30 seconds. That is why it is handy to keep a spray bottle of mixed solution ready while you brew.
What is the difference between PBW and Star San?
PBW is an alkaline cleaner that removes dirt and deposits. Star San is an acid-based sanitizer used after the equipment has been cleaned.
Can I use Star San on all equipment?
No. Acid can damage materials that cannot tolerate it, such as brass and the pressure relief valve on a PolyKeg. Star San should not be left standing in stainless steel kegs for long either.
