Description
Project Brew Wort Chiller – copper counterflow chiller
The Project Brew Wort Chiller is a compact, efficient counterflow chiller made of copper, which conducts heat significantly better than stainless steel. It chills the wort as you pump it into the fermenter and suits batches from 20 to 200 litres.
The copper pipe has a spiral-shaped inner tube ("Spiral Groove Design"). Although the chiller is only 3.9 metres long on the outside, the inner tube is 5.5 metres. The spiral shape increases turbulence and the surface area in contact with the wort, so the wort chills faster than in a conventional counterflow chiller. Fast chilling after the boil reduces the risk of DMS, and a more effective cold break means fewer unwanted proteins and particles in the beer.
Chilling performance
The chiller was tested with 9 °C tap water and a RipTide pump:
- 50 litres from 100 °C to 20 °C: approx. 5 minutes
- 50 litres from 100 °C to 13 °C: approx. 8 minutes
Tip: The larger the hoses between your brewing system, pump and chiller, the faster it goes. If the flow is low, because of a slow pump or hoses with a small inner diameter, restrict the water flow so the wort doesn't get too cold.
Technical data
- Material: copper
- Outer pipe diameter: 22.2 mm
- Outer pipe length: 3.9 metres. Inner pipe length: 5.5 metres
- Dimensions: 31 × 19 × 18 cm
- Weight: 4.5 kg
- Connections: welded-on 1/2" BSP(P) fittings for hose barbs, Tri-Clamp or Gardena
The fittings have parallel BSP(P) threads, which seal better and have a lower risk of leaks than NPT threads.
How to connect and clean the chiller
Connect the water to the inward-pointing fittings. Wort and water run in opposite directions for the best effect: the wort enters where the cooling water exits.
Clean the inner wort tube by pumping PBW through it, then rinse with clean water. Before use, recirculate boiling wort through the chiller for a few minutes to sanitize the inside.
Frequently asked questions about the Project Brew Wort Chiller
How fast does the Project Brew Wort Chiller chill?
With 9 °C tap water and a RipTide pump, it chills 50 litres from 100 °C to 20 °C in approx. 5 minutes, and to 13 °C in approx. 8 minutes.
How do I connect the counterflow chiller?
Connect the cooling water to the inward-pointing fittings and run the wort the opposite way. The chiller has 1/2" BSP(P) threads, so you can fit hose barbs, Tri-Clamp or Gardena.
How do I sanitize the chiller?
Recirculate boiling wort through the chiller for a few minutes before you start chilling. After use, pump PBW through it and rinse with clean water.
Why is fast chilling important?
Fast chilling after the boil reduces the risk of DMS, which tastes of tinned sweetcorn or cooked cabbage, and gives a more effective cold break.
Do I need a pump?
Yes, the wort must be pumped through the chiller. The performance figures were measured with a RipTide pump. A brewing system with a built-in pump can also be used.
