Description

Saaz hop pellets 100 g – Czech noble hop for pilsner

Saaz is a traditional Czech noble hop known for its mild bitterness and elegant aroma with hints of spice and herbs. It is used mainly as an aroma hop in pilsner, lager and other continental beer styles, and is often combined with other noble hops such as Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Tettnanger.

Saaz is an old landrace variety from the Czech region of the same name. BarthHaas notes that it is used in all the notable Czech pilsners and helps define the style.

Aroma and flavour

  • Spicy and woody: tarragon, lavender and cedarwood
  • Floral: elderberry, rose and camomile
  • Honey and caramel

How to use Saaz

Saaz is used mainly as an aroma hop, late in the boil and in the whirlpool. With its low alpha acids it also gives mild, rounded bitterness when added early. Suits Czech pilsner, lager and other continental styles.

Storage and quality

The hops are vacuum packed and stored in a freezer room at -18 °C, so the quality keeps for several years. We focus on offering hops from the last two harvests, but older hops can be just as good as long as they have been stored correctly. At home, keep the hops cold, dark and airtight, preferably in the freezer. Read more about shelf life and storage of hops in the article from Yakima Valley Hops (PDF).
