Trub Stopper Large from BacBrewing – hot break and hop filter for the brew kettle
The Trub Stopper sits at the bottom of the brew kettle and filters hot break material and hops from the wort. If this is not filtered out, it can affect fermentation negatively and cause off-flavours in the beer. The Large version has a diameter of 40 cm and fits larger kettles and brewing systems.
The Trub Stopper is a 2 mm thick construction of 304 stainless steel, brushed and passivated. The filter is made of micro-perforated sheet metal, not mesh, so it will not fray at the edges. It comes with a food-grade silicone ring, and all parts can be taken apart for thorough cleaning.
How to use the Trub Stopper
- Lower the Trub Stopper into the brew kettle towards the end of the boil. Use a mash paddle to centre it. The silicone ring holds it in place and withstands up to 180 °C.
- Whirlpool after the boil and let the wort rest for about 10 minutes so that trub and hops settle and collect inside the filter.
- Drain the wort. When the liquid level reaches the top of the Trub Stopper, slow down the flow so that the level inside the filter matches the level in the kettle.

Why do I need to drain slowly towards the end?
When the liquid reaches the top of the filter, the level inside the Trub Stopper must be kept equal to the level in the kettle. If you drain too fast, suction builds up inside the filter and trub can be pulled through.
How do I clean the Trub Stopper?
All parts can be taken apart. That gives you access everywhere, so you can clean the filter and silicone ring thoroughly after every brew.
