Description
French oak chips, medium toast 250 g – oak character in beer, wine and cider
French oak chips with a medium toast from Brewferm, packed in 250 g. Oak chips give beer, wine and cider an oak character without the need for a wooden barrel. They suit, for example, strong and dark beers that should have a barrel-aged touch.
How to use oak chips
- Sanitise the chips first, for example by soaking them in spirits or boiling them in water for a few minutes.
- Add the chips to the fermenter, or to the keg once the beer has finished fermenting.
- Start with a small amount and increase gradually. The oak character can become strong.
- The more chips you use, the shorter the contact time needed.

Frequently asked questions about oak chips
Do oak chips need to be sanitised before use?
Yes. Soak the chips in spirits or boil them in water for a few minutes before adding them to the beer. This keeps unwanted microorganisms out.
When should the oak chips be added?
You can add them to the fermenter or to the keg once the beer has finished fermenting. Taste the beer along the way and remove the chips when the oak character is right.
How much oak should I use?
There is no fixed amount. Oak can become very strong, so start with a little and increase gradually. More chips give faster flavour, so a shorter contact time is needed.
