Description
Mjøderiet mead kit – make base mead, medium sweet or sweet mead at home
This mead kit was developed together with Mjøderiet and lets you brew mead at home using wildflower honey from Mjøderiet, the same honey used in their award-winning mead. The kit makes 9 litres of base mead that you can leave dry and strong, or back-sweeten to a medium sweet or sweet mead. It suits both beginners and those who have made mead before.
The mead kit contains
- Mangrove Jack's M05 Mead Yeast
- 4.3 kg wildflower honey from Mjøderiet, for base mead and back-sweetening
- Mangrove Jack's Mead Nutrient
- Stabilisers: Sorbistat and Campden
- Finings: Super-Kleer K.C., a two-stage clarifier with kieselsol and chitosan
- Step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions
Technical data for the base mead, before back-sweetening
- Volume: 9 litres
- OG: 1.115
- FG: 1.000 or lower
- ABV: 15–17%
You can adjust the strength yourself with water and the included honey for back-sweetening. You can also experiment with fruit, berries or spices. The result is 9 litres of finished base mead, or more, depending on how much honey, water and other additions you use when back-sweetening. This also determines the strength of the finished mead.
Recommended equipment (not included)
- Fermenter of at least 15 litres with an airlock, for fermenting the must
- Fermenter or PET or glass carboy for clearing
- Stirring paddle
- Hydrometer that reads high enough, up to SG 1.115
- Siphon, if you like
- Star San or Chemipro San for sanitizing
Frequently asked questions about the Mjøderiet mead kit
How much mead does it make, and how strong is it?
The kit makes 9 litres of base mead at 15–17% ABV before back-sweetening. When you back-sweeten with honey and water, you get more mead and the strength goes down.
How do I make medium sweet or sweet mead?
The base mead is fermented out fully to FG 1.000 or lower. You then stabilise with the included Sorbistat and Campden and back-sweeten with the honey as described in the instructions. Sorbistat stops the yeast from starting a new fermentation when you add honey.
Which hydrometer do I need?
The base mead has an OG of 1.115, so you need a hydrometer that reads at least that high. A standard beer hydrometer often does not go high enough.
Can I add fruit or spices?
Yes. You can experiment with fruit, berries or spices to create your own variation.
