Description

Mjøderiet mead kit – make your own blueberry mead

This mead kit was developed together with Mjøderiet and lets you make blueberry mead at home. With wildflower honey from Mjøderiet, you get the same raw materials used in their award-winning mead. You first make a base mead, and then blueberry purée and honey for back-sweetening add body and fruitiness. The result is a flavourful combination of the depth of the honey and the full, round character of the blueberries.

The mead kit contains

  • Mangrove Jack's M05 Mead Yeast
  • 4.3 kg wildflower honey from Mjøderiet, for the base mead and back-sweetening
  • blueberry purée (2 kg), 100% natural, for intense fruitiness
  • Mangrove Jack's Mead Nutrient yeast nutrient
  • stabilisers: Sorbistat and Campden
  • fining: Super-Kleer K.C., a two-stage fining agent with kieselsol and chitosan
  • step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow

Technical data for the base mead, before back-sweetening and blueberries

  • Volume: 9 litres
  • OG: 1.115
  • FG: 1.000 or lower
  • ABV: 15–17%

You can adjust the sweetness from semi-sweet to sweet, and the alcohol content with water and the included honey for back-sweetening. The blueberry purée, the back-sweetening honey and the amount of water determine the final volume and alcohol content.

Recommended equipment (not included)

  • fermenter of at least 15 litres with airlock, for fermenting the must
  • fermenter or PET or glass carboy for clearing
  • stirring paddle
  • hydrometer that reads high enough, up to SG 1.115
  • siphon, if needed
  • Star San or Chemipro San to sanitize the fermenter and other equipment

Frequently asked questions about the blueberry mead kit

How much mead does it make, and how strong is it?

The base mead is 9 litres at 15–17% alcohol. When you add blueberry purée, honey and water, you get more mead with a lower alcohol content. How much is up to you.

When are the blueberries added?

The blueberry purée is added after the base mead has finished fermenting. Follow the included instructions for timing and method.

Why are Sorbistat and Campden included?

They stabilise the mead before back-sweetening. Sorbistat prevents the yeast from starting a new fermentation when you add honey and blueberries.

Which hydrometer do I need?

The base mead has an OG of 1.115, so you need a hydrometer that reads at least that high. A standard beer hydrometer often does not go high enough.
