Description
Mjøderiet mead kit – make your own strawberry mead
This mead kit was developed in collaboration with Mjøderiet and lets you make a mead full of the sweet and fresh character of strawberries. The kit contains all the ingredients you need, with a recipe and the same wildflower honey that Mjøderiet uses in its own mead. You first make a base mead, and then strawberry purée and honey for back-sweetening add sweetness and fruitiness.
The mead kit contains
- Mangrove Jack's M05 Mead Yeast
- 4.3 kg wildflower honey from Mjøderiet, for the base mead and back-sweetening
- strawberry purée (2 kg), 100% natural
- Mangrove Jack's Mead Nutrient yeast nutrient
- stabilisers: Sorbistat and Campden
- clarification: Super-Kleer K.C., two-stage fining agent with kieselsol and chitosan
- step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions
Technical data for the base mead, before back-sweetening and strawberries
- Volume: 9 litres
- OG: 1.115
- FG: 1.000 or lower
- ABV: 15–17%
You can adjust the sweetness from semi-sweet to sweet. Strawberry purée, honey for back-sweetening and the amount of water determine the final volume and alcohol content. The result is a delicate and fruity mead that combines the richness of honey with the sweetness of strawberries.
Recommended equipment (not included)
- fermenter of at least 15 litres with airlock, for fermenting the must
- fermenter or PET or glass carboy for clarification
- stirring paddle
- hydrometer that reads high enough, up to SG 1.115
- optionally a siphon
- Star San or Chemipro San for sanitizing fermenters and other equipment
Frequently asked questions about the strawberry mead kit
How much mead will I get, and how strong will it be?
The base mead is 9 litres at 15–17% alcohol. When you add strawberry purée, honey and water, you get more mead with a lower alcohol content. How much is up to you.
When are the strawberries added?
The strawberry purée is used after the base mead has finished fermenting. Follow the included instructions for timing and method.
Why are Sorbistat and Campden included?
They stabilise the mead before back-sweetening. Campden stops fermentation, and Sorbistat prevents the yeast from starting a new fermentation when you add honey and strawberries.
Which hydrometer do I need?
The base mead has an OG of 1.115, so you need a hydrometer that reads at least that high. A standard beer hydrometer often does not go high enough.
