Frequently asked questions about Spalter Select

Which beer styles suit Spalter Select?

As a German aroma hop, Spalter Select suits lager, pilsner, kölsch, bock and wheat beer, where the hops should give a fine, spicy and floral aroma without dominating.

What can I use instead of Spalter Select?

Saaz, Tettnang, Spalt and Hersbrucker are alternative hops with a related profile.

How high is the alpha acid in Spalter Select?

BarthHaas gives a typical range of 2.3–7.6% for the variety. Alpha acid varies from year to year. The alpha acid for the lot you receive is stated in the product title.

How should I store the hops?

Store the hops cold, dark and airtight, preferably in a freezer. We keep our hops vacuum-packed in a freezer room at −18 °C, and the quality holds for several years. We prioritise hops from the two most recent harvests, but older hops can be just as good if stored correctly. Read more in the article on hop shelf life and storage from Yakima Valley Hops (PDF).
