Description
Spray malt – light dried malt extract 1 kg from Handcraft Supplies
Light Dried Malt Extract (DME) from Handcraft Supplies is a pale, dried malt extract in powder form. It can be used as the base of your own recipes, as a replacement for brewing sugar in extract kits and for yeast starters. The spray malt is 100% malt-based with no additives.
Using spray malt instead of sugar gives the beer more body, better head retention and a fuller malt flavour. The pale colour suits pilsner, blonde ale, pale ale and other light styles, but the spray malt can also be used in darker beers for extra body and balance.
Uses
- As base malt in extract brewing
- As a replacement for sugar in extract kits
- For yeast starters for liquid yeast
- To raise the OG if the wort came out too thin on brew day
- To add flavour, body and malt character
How to use spray malt
Dissolve the spray malt in hot water or directly in the wort. Mixing it with a little water first helps avoid lumps. When used to raise the OG, it should be boiled for 10–15 minutes.
Yeast starter: 100 g of spray malt per litre of water gives an OG of approx. 1.040. Boil for 5–10 minutes, cool below 25 °C and add the yeast. Use the palest spray malt for starters.
Frequently asked questions about light spray malt
Can I use spray malt instead of sugar in an extract kit?
Yes. Spray malt can replace brewing sugar in extract kits and gives more body, better head and a fuller malt flavour than sugar.
How much spray malt do I need for a yeast starter?
100 g of spray malt per litre of water gives a starter with an OG of approx. 1.040, so a 1 litre starter needs about 100 g.
What do I do if my OG is too low on brew day?
Add spray malt to the wort and boil for 10–15 minutes. It is a good idea to keep a bag of spray malt on hand on brew day.
Does spray malt contain gluten?
Yes. Spray malt is made from malt and contains gluten. Gluten-free extract kits are brewed with sugar instead.
What is the difference between spray malt and liquid malt extract?
