Star San 1 gallon – acid-based sanitizer for brewing equipment
Star San is an acid-based sanitizer for brewing equipment, fermenters, bottles, kegs and everything else on the cold side of brewing. It is self-foaming, so it reaches difficult places too. The 1 gallon (3.8 litre) jug suits you if you use a lot.
Please note: This product is only available in Norway.
It can be used without rinsing as before, but Star San, Saniclean, Chemipro San and similar products are now recommended, in line with legislation, to be rinsed with water after use.
How to use Star San
- 1 oz (30 ml) to 19 litres (5 gallons) of water
- 15 ml to 9.5 litres of water
Sanitize with Star San after the equipment has been cleaned. For cleaning, use PBW.

Frequently asked questions about Star San
How much Star San should I mix?
30 ml to 19 litres of water, or 15 ml to 9.5 litres. A 3.8 litre jug therefore makes around 2,400 litres of solution.
Do I need to clean the equipment before using Star San?
Yes. Star San sanitises but does not clean. Clean first with PBW, then sanitize.
What needs to be sanitized?
Everything that touches the wort after the boil: fermenters, hoses, bottles, kegs and other cold-side equipment.
Why does Star San foam?
The foam lets the sanitizer reach corners, threads and hoses that liquid alone does not reach.
