WLN4700 Zinc Buddy – ready-to-use zinc solution as yeast nutrient for beer
WLN4700 Zinc Buddy from White Labs is a pre-mixed zinc solution that keeps the yeast healthier during fermentation. The pack contains three 10 ml vials, 30 ml in total, ready to use. The solution is sterilised and acidified to pH 4.0 so that the zinc dissolves well and is easily taken up by the yeast.

- Yeast health: Zinc is essential for the yeast's protein synthesis and growth. According to White Labs, Zinc Buddy can increase the viability of harvested yeast by more than 5 % and give a 10–15 % denser cell concentration at harvest, because flocculation improves.
- Fermentation: Zinc promotes the uptake of maltose and maltotriose. White Labs states that attenuation can increase up to 95 %, and that most ales reach final gravity 1–2 days faster and clear faster.
- Flavour: Less diacetyl and fewer sulphur compounds, and less hop creep when dry hopping, give a cleaner flavour profile.
How to use Zinc Buddy
- Shake the vial well before use.
- Sanitise the cap with isopropanol or another suitable sanitizer and loosen it carefully.
- Pour the desired amount of Zinc Buddy directly into the fermenter before pitching the yeast, so that it mixes well into the wort.
- Wipe up any spills with isopropanol or sanitizer and put the cap back on the vial.
How does Zinc Buddy differ from Servomyces?
Servomyces is yeast grown in a zinc-rich environment, so the zinc is built into the cell walls. When the yeast dies, the zinc is released and efficiently taken up by the yeast you pitch into the wort. An advantage of Servomyces is that it can be added towards the end of the boil, because the yeast cells protect the zinc from binding to proteins in the trub.

- Dosage: 1 g/hl, giving 0.5 ppm zinc in total in the wort
Zinc Buddy is a sterile, pre-mixed zinc solution that is added directly on the cold side. Servomyces must be dissolved and added during the boil or in the whirlpool, while Zinc Buddy is ready to use straight away.

Servomyces gives a higher total zinc concentration (0.5 ppm versus 0.2 ppm from mineral zinc), but too much mineral zinc can cause off-flavours in the beer. If you already use Servomyces, it gives the best results because the zinc is more readily available to the yeast. If you want a simple, sterile and ready-to-use alternative, Zinc Buddy is a good fit.
