Base malt for brewing – pilsner malt, pale ale malt and Munich
Base malt is the malt that makes up most of the grain bill in all-grain brewing. Here you will find base malts from Bestmalz, Thomas Fawcett, Weyermann and Norwegian Bonsak Gårdsmalteri: pilsner malt, pale ale malt, Vienna, Munich and wheat malt. The malt is sold in 100 g steps, whole or crushed, and the EBC colour is in the product name.
Please note: Loose malt (100 g, 20 kg and 25 kg) is currently not sold to Sweden. Malt extract and beer kits can be ordered as usual.
How to choose base malt
- Pale, clean beers such as pilsner, lager and Kölsch: choose pilsner malt such as BEST Pilsen, Weyermann Bohemian Pilsner or Bonsak Fairytale Pils.
- Pale ale, IPA and British beers: BEST Pale Ale gives a fuller golden colour, and Maris Otter gives a rich, slightly nutty malt flavour.
- Amber and dark beers: BEST Munich and Munich Dark add more malt sweetness and colour. Vienna sits between pilsner and Munich.
- Wheat beer: BEST Wheat or Bonsak Hvete Pale, which gives a distinct nutty grain flavour.

Frequently asked questions about base malt
How much of the grain bill can be base malt?
According to Bestmalz, BEST Pilsen, Pale Ale, Vienna, Munich and Munich Dark can be used at up to 100%. In most recipes the base malt makes up the bulk, and specialty malts are added for colour and flavour.
What is the difference between pilsner malt and pale ale malt?
Pilsner malt is the palest and gives a clean, neutral malt flavour. Pale ale malt is slightly darker and gives a fuller golden colour and more malt character, which suits pale ale, IPA and British beers.
How do I buy 5 or 25 kg of base malt?
The malt is sold in 100 g units. For 5 kg, add 50 units, and for 25 kg add 250. Full 25 kg sacks are listed under base malt in full sacks, which is part of the professional range and only available in Norway.
