Description
Oxygenation stone 0.5 micron with 1/4" MFL thread – oxygen for your wort
Stainless steel oxygenation stone with 0.5 micron pores and a 1/4" MFL (flare) thread. The stone is used to add pure oxygen to cooled wort just before pitching the yeast. The fine pores produce small bubbles that dissolve well in the wort. The thread connects to a hose with a 1/4" FFL nut, for example a hose barb with nut or a John Guest adapter.
How to use the stone
- Connect the stone to the oxygen regulator using hose and a nut with a 1/4" FFL thread. Use a flare washer (gasket) in the nut.
- Lower the stone into the cooled wort and add oxygen before pitching the yeast.
- Brewshop recommends a regulator pressure of 0.5–1 bar.
- Never add oxygen once fermentation has started.
How much oxygen does the wort need?
Brewshop's rule of thumb for 25 litres: ales up to OG 1.060 need about 8 ppm, which equals 1 litre of oxygen per minute for 80 seconds. Ales above OG 1.060 and lagers need about 14 ppm, i.e. 1 l/min for 160 seconds.
Cleaning
- Rinse the stone thoroughly in hot water right after use to remove wort and yeast residue.
- Wash it in a brewery cleaner such as PBW or another oxygen-based cleaner. Mix according to the manufacturer's instructions, soak the stone for 20–30 minutes and rinse thoroughly in hot water.
- Soak the stone in Star San or another sanitizer for at least 5 minutes before use.
- Let the stone dry completely and store it clean and dry until the next brew.
- If the stone is badly clogged, boil it in water for 10–15 minutes or soak it in a mild phosphoric acid solution.
- Do not touch the surface with your fingers. Skin oils can clog the fine pores.

Frequently asked questions about the 0.5 micron oxygenation stone
Why oxygenate the wort?
Yeast needs oxygen to multiply at the start of fermentation. Too little oxygen can cause sluggish fermentation, poor attenuation and off-flavours. It matters most with high OG, lagers and large batches.
What do I connect the stone to?
The stone has a 1/4" MFL thread and connects to a 1/4" FFL nut, for example a hose barb with nut or a John Guest adapter with 1/4" FFL. Use a flare washer in the nut for a tight seal.
Can I add oxygen after pitching the yeast?
Oxygen is added only before fermentation starts. Oxygen added once fermentation is under way can lead to oxidised beer.
How do I keep the stone clean?
Rinse it right after use, wash it in PBW and soak it in sanitizer before the next use. A clogged stone can be boiled in water for 10–15 minutes.
